Technorati again

Now that I've had time to do a more detailed search I've found some interesting sites.

I was irritated by the amount of time it took to find anything useful, and by the haphazard tagging on some blogs. (Yes, I realise this is because I work in a library and I'm used to everything being "properly" catalogued!) It seems that good tagging is essential.

The Moonee Valley Library blog allows patrons to submit book reviews, which I think is a good idea.

And this site from Christchurch NZ, has a great list of categories and tags.

Technorati

In my first look at Technorati I did a couple of basic searches, one for “libraries” and one for “owls”, and the results were vast and varied, as I expected!

I can see the value of blogs that have a specific purpose and target audience, but I find myself wondering about the many thousands of personal blogs.

When do people find the time to write? Who do they expect to read their ramblings? How do they feel about anyone, everyone, or in fact no-one reading what they write? And where does anonymity fit into this? Is it scary or liberating? I find myself wondering if I should give it a try to find out (now that IS scary!!!)

Learning 2.0

What do I hope to learn from this program?

Well, although I’m quite comfortable with computers and the internet, this course covers a range of topics about which I know very little.

I’ve had the idea that blogs etc were mostly of social & entertainment value for the young, with limited value for the wider community, so I thought it would be a good opportunity to find out how these things really work.

The sample blogs demonstrated a good range of library oriented uses, and now I can see that Web 2.0 offers a wider range of possibilities than I realised.

I particularly enjoyed the Southern Tablelands site. What a great way to present local history, and I’m already mentally planning a site for my local community!
